What counts as a normal BMI range?
This calculator uses the Asia-Pacific WHO-adjusted thresholds: under 18.5 is underweight, 18.5–24 is normal, 24–27 is overweight, and 27+ is obese. These cutoffs are slightly stricter than the standard international WHO thresholds (25/30), which are calibrated for Asian body compositions.
Does a high BMI always mean someone is overweight?
Not necessarily. BMI only accounts for height and weight, not the ratio of muscle to fat. People with high muscle mass, like athletes or weightlifters, can have a high BMI while having a healthy body fat percentage. It's best used alongside other measures like body fat percentage or waist circumference.
Does BMI apply to everyone?
BMI works well as a first-pass screening tool for the general adult population, but it's less reliable for pregnant women, growing children and teens, older adults, and competitive athletes. These groups should consult a doctor for a more complete assessment.
