How to read BMI ranges
BMI equals weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. Many charts then map the result into underweight, normal, overweight, or obesity bands. Adult cutoffs used in public health are not identical in every country, so always check which chart a report uses.
Common misunderstandings
- “Normal” BMI does not guarantee healthy blood pressure or blood sugar.
- “Overweight” on the chart is not the same as a clinical diagnosis of disease.
- Athletes with high muscle mass may sit higher on the scale without excess fat.
- One measurement after travel, illness, or dehydration is a poor baseline.
Practical approach
Weigh under similar conditions, note the number, and watch the trend. Combine BMI with waist, activity, and how you feel. Children and teens need age-specific charts, not adult tables.
Try the BMI calculator with your usual height units, then return here if the category is confusing. Related reading: BMI as a starting point.

Regional charts and reports
Some regions publish adult bands that differ slightly from a generic WHO-style poster. When a school, employer, or clinic issues a report, read the footnote on which table they used. Do not mix pediatric percentile charts with adult calculators.
If height is entered in the wrong unit, the entire category is wrong. Double-check centimeters versus inches before worrying about the label. Recalculate once with careful inputs, then decide whether lifestyle tracking or clinical follow-up is the next step.
How this guide fits the site
Daily Toolkit pages are free browser utilities: no account is required for the basic calculators. Guides explain ideas, limits, and mistakes; tools perform the arithmetic or conversion on your device when designed that way. If an official form, bank, school, or clinician specifies a method, follow that method even when a webpage shows a different estimate.
